In 2010-11, you invested, through the Alberta Cancer Foundation, $29.2 million in cancer research, care, prevention and screening.
This success was due to outstanding support from individual philanthropists, event organizers, participants and estate gifts.
You helped ease the cancer journey for 16,000 Albertans who heard the words, “you have cancer.” Your support helped create a comprehensive patient journal that allows people to manage their often-complicated cancer care. You gave nearly 2700 grants to patients who needed financial assistance during treatment.
For the first time, therapists delivered radiation therapy at Lethbridge’s Jack Ady Cancer Centre, allowing more Albertans to stay closer to home while in treatment. And, together with Alberta Health Services, you helped us launch “Thrive on Wellness,” a program that helps communities focus on healthy living to reduce the risk of major health threats like cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
We continue to place a strong emphasis on funding research: we are proud to support projects ranging from investigating cancer mechanisms at a molecular level to improving pain control and quality of life for cancer patients.
Our Report to Donors reflects the impact the Alberta Cancer Foundation and our donors have on Albertans facing cancer. It allows us to fulfill our commitment to transparency (see financial statements here ) and accountability. While we are responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us and our performance compares well to other organizations, we are dedicated to continually improving efficiency so as much of your donation as possible goes to our shared goal—a cancer-free future.
Over the next year, the Alberta Cancer Foundation will strengthen partnerships with care providers, researchers, and government. Together with these partners we will refine our program strategies and look for ways to increase the support and performance of cancer research, care and prevention programs in Alberta.
We have much to celebrate but much more to do. Thank you for helping us unravel the mysteries surrounding this disease and being such a powerful part of Alberta’s cancer-free movement.
